Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio will headline the Donmar Warehouse production of Grand Hotel, which will run from November 19 through February 12. She will take on the role of ballerina Elizaveta Grushinskaya in the musical, a production spokesperson confirmed.
Mastrantonio, best known for her work in Hollywood, earned a 2003 Tony Award nomination for her performance as Aldonza in Man of La Mancha. She has also appeared on Broadway in the musicals West Side Story, Copperfield, Oh, Brother and The Human Comedy and the play The Marriage of Figaro. Her off-Broadway credits include Sunday in the Park With George, The Knife, The Human Comedy and Shakespeare in the Park mountings of Henry V, Measure for Measure and Twelfth Night. Mastrantonio received a Best Supporting Actress Academy Award nomination for her work in The Color of Money. Her other film credits include The Perfect Storm, My Life So Far, Three Wishes, Consenting Adults, Class Action, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, The Abyss and Scarface.
Grand Hotel, based on Vicki Baum's original text of the same name, features a book by Luther Davis and music and lyrics by George Forrest and Robert Wright with additional music and lyrics by Maury Yeston. The tuner takes place in Berlin in 1928, when decadence was a way of life.
Grand Hotel opened at Broadway's Martin Beck Theatre on November 12, 1989 with Liliane Montevecchi in the role of Grushinskaya. The production moved to the George Gershwin Theatre in February 1992, running there until April 25, 1992. In addition to Montevecchi, Rene Ceballos, Cyd Charisse and Zina Bethune all played Grushinskaya on the Great White Way.
The Donmar Warehouse production of Grand Hotel will be directed by the company's artistic director Michael Grandage. Adam Cooper will choreograph and Christopher Oram will provide the set and costume design.
