Casting is set for Bryony Lavery's Last Easter at MCC Theater. Jeffrey CarlsonVeanne Cox, Clea Lewis and Florencia Lozano will star in the world premiere play. The play will begin previews on September 15 at the Lucille Lortel Theatre and open there on October 7.
Last Easter centers on June Cox, a woman dying of cancer. Her best friends, Heather Lewis, Joy Lozano, and Gash Carlson, embark on a whirlwind journey to find a cure, whisking her from her home in London all the way from Texas to Lourdes, where she is thoroughly dunked in the holy water. They're all theatre folk, so their lunatic pilgrimage is filled with magical lighting and musical effects including drag acts and a ghostly stagehand, who appears magically like a dream.
Carlson most recently appeared on the Great White Way in Taboo. His other Broadway credits include The Goat and Tartuffe. Cox, currently appearing in Caroline, or Change, was nominated for a Tony Award for her performance in Company. Lewis, a former cast member on TV's Ellen appeared off-Broadway in Writer's Block. Lozano is a former regular of TV's One Life to Live and has appeared in a number of shows by the LAByrinth Theatre Company.
The play reunites MCC's Frozen team: playwright Lavery and director Doug Hughes. Last Easter will end its limited engagement on October 23.
