Desmond Richardson, the dance star who was nominated for a 1999 Tony Award for his work in the musical Fosse, is joining the company of Movin' Out. He will assume the role of Tony in the hit Broadway musical the week of August 23 according to a production spokesperson.
Prior to his work in Fosse, Richardson was a principal dancer with American Ballet Theatre, Alvin Ailey and the Frankfurt Ballet. He has also appeared in the films Chicago, One Last Dance and the upcoming Light and the Sufferer. Richardson was most recently seen in New York in the Encores! staging of House of Flowers and the short-lived Burt Bacharach/Hal David revue The Look of Love on Broadway.
Keith Roberts, the Tony-nominated performer who originated the role of Tony in Movin' Out has been out of the show with a knee injury since earlier this month. Understudy Ian Carney has been playing Tony in his absence.
Movin' Out, featuring the music of Billy Joel and choreography by Twyla Tharp, tells of the lives of a close group of friends whose lives are changed over the course of two turbulent decades.
