Lincoln Center Theater has announced dates for its upcoming production of the new Lynn Ahrens/Stephen Flaherty musical Dessa Rose. The tuner, directed and choreographed by Graciela Daniele, will begin performances off-Broadway at the Mitzi E. Newhouse Theatre on February 17 in preparation for a March 21 opening, according to a production spokesperson.
This musical Dessa Rose is based on Sherley A. Williams' novel of the same name. It tells the story of a runaway slave and the white woman who harbors her on a secluded farm. LaChanze and Donna Murphy played the main roles in a summer 2003 reading of the work, but no casting has been confirmed for the upcoming production.
Before Dessa Rose arrives at the Newhouse, LCT is presenting Belle Epoque, a new work by Martha Clarke and Charles L. Mee, at the theater. With a cast that includes Vivienne Benesch, Rob Besserer, Joyce Castle, Tomé Cousin, Honora Fergusson, Nina Goldman, Ruth Maleczech, Gabrielle Malone, Mark Povinelli, Michael Stuhlbarg, Paola Styron and Rebecca Wender, that show is scheduled to run from October 28, 2004 to January 2, 2005.
