Bert V. Royal's Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead, winner of a FringeNYC Award for Best Overall Production, did not start its two-week run at the Soho Playhouse last night as was announced. Instead of running September 1 through September 12 at its Fringe home, the show's return engagement at the theater has been pushed back. It will now play there September 8 through September 19. The delay was necessitated when Actors' Equity demanded the stint be done under a normal off-Broadway contract, instead of a showcase contract as is used in the Fringe.
Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead is an unauthorized parody of the Charlie Brown comic characters. In the play, audience members find out what happens when America's favorite blockhead discovers that his beloved beagle has rabies. A missing pen-pal, an abused pianist, a pyromaniac ex-girlfriend, two drunk cheerleaders, a homophobic quarterback, a burned-out Buddhist and a drama-queen sister are all contributing factors to the teen angst of America's most hapless kid. The show, directed by Susan Lovell, features Michael Gladis, Bridget Barkan, Karen Diconcetto, Tate Ellington, Benjamin Schrader, Jay Sullivan, Melissa Picarello and Stelianie Tekmitchov.
The show receive good reviews during its run at the Fringe. Eric Grode is his Broadway.com Review wrote: "Dog Sees God is a very crude, very funny, wonderful piece of writing, and one can only hope audiences will be allowed to experience it long after the Fringe Festival has ended."
