Everyone knew that the Republican National Convention, which took place last week in New York, would wreak havoc on the Broadway grosses… and everyone was right. Last year during the same week, Broadway took in $13,800,285. This year the figure was reduced to $10,919,377, a decline of 21 percent. Without theatergoing tourists flooding the city, long-runners felt the biggest hits, especially The Lion King. The Disney musical, which consistently packs them in at the New Amsterdam, was down a whopping $251,205 from the week ending August 29 and came in at $917,339.
