As we previously reported, Andrea Martin will play Golde opposite Harvey Fierstein's Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof. She begins in the role on January 4, a production spokesperson confirmed to Broadway.com.
Martin has three Broadway credits Candide, My Favorite Year and Oklahoma!, each of which netted her Tony Award nominations. She won the Tony, Drama Desk and Theatre World Awards for her performance in My Favorite Year. Her other theatrical credits include The Royal Family , The Merry Wives of Windsor, The Sorrows of Stephen, She Loves Me and her solo show Nude Nude Totally Nude. Earlier this year she starred in the Huntington Theatre Company production of The Rose Tattoo in Boston. She is also a two-time Emmy winner, receiving awards for her writing on SCTV. The actress, who has a long list of big screen credits including a memorable featured role in My Big Fat Greek Wedding, most recently appeared on the big screen in New York Minute starring Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen.
Fiddler on the Roof features book by Joseph Stein, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick and music by Jerry Bock. The story of the show--inspired by the stories of Sholom Aleichem--concerns Tevye and his daughters, who are yearning for something new as great changes are happening in the world outside their village of Anatevka. The score includes such songs as "If I Were a Rich Man," "Matchmaker, Matchmaker," "Sunrise, Sunset" and "To Life."
This revival, directed by David Leveaux, opened with Alfred Molina and Randy Graff in the leads on February 26, 2004. Molina and Graff will exit the show on January 2.
