Stage Version of Fried Green Tomatoes Looks to Broadway Future

Will Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café be coming to the Great White Way? Maybe so. Producer Jeffrey Finn, currently represented in New York by On Golden Pond, has optioned the stage rights to the Fannie Flagg novel and plans on presenting it regionally in 2006 and on Broadway in 2007.

Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café centers Mrs. Ninny Threadgoode's stories about the goings on at the Whistle Stop Café in Alabama. She finds and unlikely audience for these stories in the form of Evelyn Couch, a woman in the slump of a mid-life crisis. Mrs. Threadgoode tells tales to Evelyn about the beautiful Ruth and her best friend, the irrepressibly dare-devilish tomboy Idgie. As owners of the Whistle Stop, they serve up generous helpings of great food, Southern wisdom and a side dish of intrigue. As the past unfolds, the spirit of Ruth and Idgie rubs off on Evelyn, giving her a new lease on life.

Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café came out in 1987. Flagg with co-writer Jon Avnet adapted the novel into a 1991 feature film. The stage show will be titled only Fried Green Tomatoes, just as the film was.
