Songs from an Unmade Bed, a musical featuring the work of many different composers, will end its scheduled run at New York Theatre Workshop one week early. The show will now shutter on Sunday, June 19.
Songs from an Unmade Bed features music by Debra Barsha, Mark Bennett, Peter Foley, Jenny Giering, Peter Golub, Jake Heggie, Stephen Hoffman, Lance Horne, Gihieh Lee, Steve Marzullo, Brendan Milburn, Chris Miller, Greg Pliska, Duncan Sheik, Jeffrey Stock and Joseph Thalken. Each composer contributed one song to the tuner and each song features lyrics by Mark Campbell. The tunes tell the story of a gay New Yorker's heartaches and triumphs in the big city. Michael Winther stars.
Directed by David Schweizer and with musical direction by Kimberly Grigsby, the piece officially opened on May 24. In his Broadway.com Review of the show, Eric Grode wrote: "With so many different songwriters, a specific voice is required from the lyrics. And Campbell's clever, mercurial, seasoned, slightly self-enamored protagonist has that in spades… The majority of Campbell's lyrics, however, are too clever by half. Words like 'quiescent' and 'plaudits' hit the listener's ear with a thud… It's hardly the fault of Winther, who sounds lovely throughout but seems less comfortable during the comic numbers, that the verbal barrage keeps us at an emotional distance. Similarly, Schweizer has a handful of clever ideas but works overtime to keep the audience's interest… Even if the whole of Songs From an Unmade Bed is less than the sum of its parts, it provides a welcome scouting opportunity for new songwriters."
