Elmina's Kitchen, which transferred from the National Theatre to the West End in April, will end its run at the Garrick Theatre on July 23.
Written by and starring Kwame Kwei-Armah, Elmina's Kitchen is the story of a single dad's struggle to survive and protect his wayward son from the temptations of crime. Set in a rundown West Indian café in Hackney, Deli takes on a new waitress, feisty Anastasia, to help him clean up and improve his café. Meanwhile, his son Ashley and his old friend Digger are out to advance themselves in a rather different way whilst Deli's own father and his best friend have their own ideas for self-improvement.
The show, directed by Angus Jackson, opened at the Garrick on April 26. In his review of the production, The Guardian's Michael Billington wrote: "While it's cheering to find black theatre taking centre stage, Kwei-Armah's lively, dialogue-rich play eventually lapses into melodrama: it's good, gutsy stuff but less thoughtful than his follow-up play, Fix Up… Angus Jackson's production can't solve all the plot problems but adorns the action with vibrant live music and gets excellent performances all round."
