The Broadway.com editorial staff nominated Butz and seven other worthy performers as Star of the Year for 2005. The nominees all displayed the rare combination of talent, personality and undeniable stage presence—in shows that would have been all the less without them. Here's a complete list of this year's nominees:

Christina Applegate
For having the gumption and perseverance to get up, get out and do it as the dizzy heroine of Sweet Charity.

Harvey Fierstein
For defying odds and shattering stereotypes with his grounded, moving work as Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof.

Cherry Jones
For proving that she is one of the strongest actresses of her generation as the straight-backed, unflinching Sister Aloysius in Doubt.

Patti LuPone
For ending a too-long Broadway musical hiatus to put her distinct spin on meat pie maven Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd.

Chita Rivera
For reaffirming her status as a Broadway legend to love in Chita Rivera: The Dancer's Life.

Kathleen Turner
For infusing the boozy, blowsy, embittered Martha with an unexpected vulnerability in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?

John Lloyd Young
For hitting the high notes of both the music and the character of Frankie Valli in the enjoyable jukebox tuner Jersey Boys.
