Musical Version of Cry-Baby to Debut at Seattle's 5th Avenue Theatre

The musical version of Cry-Baby will have its world premiere at Seattle's 5th Avenue Musical Theatre Company. The musical is scheduled to run there from February 13, 2007 through March 4, 2007.

Cry-Baby, written and directed by John Waters, is a send-up of 1950s teenage melodramas. The central character in the film, Wade "Cry-Baby" Walker, is the leader of the gang known as the Drapes, who falls for the clean-cut leader of the appropriately titled Squares, Allison Vernon-Williams. The movie gave Johnny Depp his first leading film role.

The musical version of Cry-Baby will feature a libretto by Hairspray book writers Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan, music by Adam Schlesinger and lyrics by David Javerbaum. Mark Brokaw will direct, and Rob Ashford will choreograph.

The venue hosted the world premiere of another John Waters screen-to-stage tuner, Hairspray. It also recently presented the pre-Broadway tryout of The Wedding Singer.
