Resurrection Blues originally premiered in Minneapolis in 2002. It opened in London on March 2 in a version that Miller revised extensively before his death. The play is set in an unnamed South American banana republic and revolves around the military dictatorship's capture of a man thought to be the messiah. The rights to his execution, by crucifixion, are sold to an American television network.
This production marked veteran film director Robert Altman's British stage debut. It has a high-profile cast headlined by Maximilian Schell, Neve Campbell, Matthew Modine, James Fox, Jane Adams and Peter McDonald.
In his review for Theatre.com, Matt Wolf wrote: "There's copious resuscitation needed to make a satisfying evening out of Resurrection Blues, which is going to be hard to beat as the year's highest-profile disappointment. A merger of two formidable artists in Robert Altman and the late Arthur Miller, the dramatist's penultimate play brings out the best in no one, with the possible exception of veteran actor Maximilian Schell who brings a lifetime of craft to an enjoyable performance that nonetheless seems to belong to a different show."
