The 299-seat theater is located on 316 East 91st Street. The space has reportedly been a theatrical venue since 1980. Past tenants include After the Fall with Frank Langella, Crossing the Bar, Women Beware Women, A Bronx Tale with Chazz Palminteri, Identical Twins from Baltimore, Tovah: Out of Her Mind, The Fishkin Touch, The Gathering which later played on Broadway, The Jazz Singer, Straight Jacket and The Syringa Tree. Menopause the Musical opened September 26, 2002, and just closed on May 14.
In recent years, off-Broadway has lost the Variety Arts, the John Houseman and the Douglas Fairbanks. However new theaters have popped up, including the high-profile 37 Arts and New World Stages complexes.
