Amajuba: Like Doves We Rise, which ran at the West End's Criterion Theatre in 2005, is scheduled to hit off-Broadway next month. The show will run at The Culture Project 45 Bleecker Street from July 20 through August 27.
Amajuba: Like Doves We Rise is made up of personal stories from South Africa. Created and directed by Yael Farber, the show paints a portrait of survival in the South African townships, with narratives based on the real lives of the five performers who make up the cast: Tshallo Chokwe, Roelf Matlala, Bongeka Mpongwana, Phillip "Tipo" Tindisa and Jabulile Tshabalala. The piece began at a small theater in Johannesburg in 2000 and played in South Africa for two years. It extensively toured the UK and ran at London's Criterion Theatre from April 5 through April 30, 2005.
Amajuba: Like Doves We Rise is scheduled to open in New York on July 25.
