No Child..., a solo play written and performed by Nilaja Sun that recently ran at Theatre Row, is transferring to the Barrow Street Theatre. It will begin performances there on July 8.
No Child... examines the New York City Public Education system. During the show, Sun portrays the teachers, students, parents, administrators, janitors and security guards who inhabit our public schools every day and are shaping the future of America. The play is based on Sun's experiences teaching drama at Malcolm X High School in the Bronx.
No Child..., directed by Hal Brooks, opened at Theatre Row's Beckett Theater on May 10 and closed there on June 18. In his Broadway.com Review of the show, Ron Lasko wrote: "The story here really isn't anything new; we've all seen our share of great-teacher-inspires-tough-students dramas. No Child... is refreshing in its simplicity and straightforward approach. Yes, there's some gunfire and teen pregnancy, but these clichés are kept to a minimum and are mostly incidental. What's different here is that Sun has structured No Child... as a play her story within a play Our Country's Good within a play the convicts' drama. She has also very ingeniously provided a narrator for her own story… Equally refreshing is Sun's complete lack of pretension. She doesn't project any of the look-at-me ego of so many solo shows."
No Child... will officially open at the Barrow Street on July 16.
