Burleigh Grime$ to Shutter at New World Stages on July 16

The critically lambasted off-Broadway play Burleigh Grime$, starring Wendie Malick and Mark Moses, will have its last performance at New World Stages on July 16. At the time it closes, the production will have had 24 previews and 39 regular performances.

Set in a world where no bad deed goes unrewarded, Burleigh Grime$ examines the force of capitalism in America. At the beginnings of his Wall Street career, George Radbourn James Badge Dale, a New England blue-blood, is too self-satisfied to recognize that his mentor, Burleigh Grimes Moses, may not be entirely sincere in appearance or agenda. A driven and hard-driving stock market powerhouse, Grimes is a man of infinite calculation and relentless purpose, further assisted in his financial schemes by media maven Elizabeth Bigley Malick. In an arena where the naïve and sentimental face ruin, George struggles for survival under the manipulative hand of Grimes' flexible business tactics, while also dealing with the arrival of his college sweetheart, Grace Redding Ashley Williams, who will soon have to face some difficult choices of her own.

Roger Kirby's Burleigh Grime$, directed by David Warren, opened at New World Stages on June 13 to poor notices. In his Broadway.com Review of the mounting, Rob Kendt wrote: "Roger Kirby's flimsy stinker of a play, Burleigh Grime$, is about a Wall Street buccaneer who habitually inflates and deflates the value of ephemeral companies to make a stock-market killing. So I guess it counts as a kind of backhanded tribute to the play's thematic resonance when I say that director David Warren's pointlessly lavish new off-Broadway production made me think 'tax shelter…' Kirby's plotting is plentiful but weak, confusing satire's license for exaggeration with a penchant for utter fantasy."
