Broadway Grosses: The Lion King Keeps Roaring Along

The venue change for Disney's The Lion King hasn't hurt the smash hit musical. The show, which opened in November 1997 at the New Amsterdam Theatre, transferred to the Minskoff Theatre last month to make room for Mary Poppins. The move didn't affect the show's popularity: The Lion King grossed $1,259,937 for the week ending July 23 and filled the Minskoff to 100.01% capacity. At the other end of the box-office spectrum, Hot Feet closed on July 23 at the Hilton Theatre after 12 previews and 89 performances, drawing 39.67% of the theater's capacity in its final week.
