Emmy Award winner Daniel J. Travanti will make his New York stage debut in The Last Word…, a new play by Oren Safdie Private Jokes, Public Places. Previews will begin at the Theatre at St. Clement's on January 30, with opening night set for February 8. The off-Broadway production will be directed by Alex Lippard.
Daniel J. Travanti stars as Henry Grunwald, a Viennese Jew who fled the Nazis and became a successful advertising executive in New York. Now retired and determined to fulfill his dream of becoming a playwright, Henry engages the assistance of a young, opinionated NYU student who shares his passion for writing and headstrong spirit. Travanti originated his role in the play's world-premiere production last year at Malibu Stage Company.
Travanti is best known for his Emmy-winning portrayal of Captain Frank Furillo on Hill Street Blues and currently appears as President Richard Mills on Prison Break. His stage credits include Old Wicked Songs and All My Sons at the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego; A Touch of the Poet at American Repertory Theatre, Arena Stage and Denver Theatre Center; The Guys in Chicago; The Aspern Papers and Les Liaisons Dangereuses in London; and Rhinoceros and Only Kidding at the Cleveland Playhouse. He toured as Nick in Edward Albee's Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf opposite Colleen Dewhurst, in Twigs opposite Sada Thompson and I Never Sang for My Father, which was later filmed for PBS' American Playhouse.
Joining Travanti in The Last Word… is Adam Green, whose New York credits include All This Intimacy, The Mines of Sulphur, Bone Portraits and Amerikus Rex. Regional credits include Awake and Sing!, The Chosen, The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter and The Merchant of Venice.
The production features set design by Michael V. Moore, lighting design by Lucas Krech and costume design by Kirche Zeile. The producers are Les Gutman and Elizabeth Cockrell in association with Friendly Fire.
