The film version of the well-loved Broadway musical Dreamgirls took home three 2007 Golden Globe Awards including Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy. Stars Jennifer Hudson and Eddie Murphy, who play Effie White and James "Thunder" Early respectively, also took home trophies in the supporting acting categories.
Dreamgirls, which was nominated for five Golden Globes, has earned $67 million in five weeks of release. It is the fourth live action movie musical to win in the Best Motion Picture category, following Evita 1997, Moulin Rouge 2002 and Chicago 2003.
The other major 2007 Golden Golden winners in the film categories included Babel Best Motion Picture - Drama, Meryl Streep Best Actress - The Devil Wears Prada, Helen Mirren Best Actress - The Queen, Sacha Baron Cohen Best Actor - Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan, Forest Whitaker Best Actor - The Last King of Scotland and Martin Scorsese Best Director - The Departed.
In other Broadway news, The Vertical Hour star Bill Nighy won in the category of Best Actor in a Miniseries or TV Movie for Gideon's Daughter.
