The Broadway-bound musical A Catered Affair will open next spring at the Walter Kerr Theater, most recently the home of Grey Gardens. The show, which will be directed by John Doyle, begins previews on March 25, 2008, and will open on April 17. A pre-Broadway tryout is set for San Diego's Old Globe Theatre in September.
A Catered Affair will feature a book by Harvey Fierstein who also co-stars in the show and a score by John Bucchino. The cast includes Faith Prince, Tom Wopat, Leslie Kritzer and Matt Cavanaugh.
The musical reveals relationships strained to their limits when a couple must decide whether to spend their life savings on a family business or to launch their only daughter's marriage with a lavish catered affair. The show is based on the 1956 feature film written by Gore Vidal, with an original teleplay by Paddy Chayefsky.
The design team for A Catered Affair will include David Gallo sets, Ann Hould-Ward costumes, Brian MacDevitt lights Dan Moses Schreier sound, Zachary Borovay projections and David Lawrence hair. The musical is being produced by Jujamcyn Theaters, Jordan Roth, Harvey Entertainment/Ron Fierstein, Richie Jackson and Daryl Roth.
