A new show especially for kids is headed to off-Broadway's Daryl Roth Theatre: the kids' rock band FunkeyMonkeys will begin an open-ended run on October 14. Performances will be held at 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM on Sundays, with Saturday shows to be added beginning November 24.
FunkeyMonkeys, created by Dora the Explorer composer Joshua Sitron, are a band of musical monkeys who play their own instruments, twist their own balloons and make up zany stories on the spot with help from the audience recommended for ages 2 through 8. Each monkey plays a variety of instruments, is trained in improv comedy and has extensive professional experience working with children. The cast includes Mike Gold, the master balloon twister known as Ballooniac; Carey White, the zany violin virtuoso and yenta; and musical wunderkinds Stuart Bogie, Brian Carter and Eric Biondo.
The FunkeyMonkeys band made its live stage debut in September 2003 at Makor on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, becoming an instant hit. The group has released four CDs: Funkey Monkeys!; Sing, Dance and Underpants; Jewish Funkey Monkeys and Tastes Like Chicken. The off-Broadway FunkeyMonkeys concert is co-created by Kimberly Foster and presented by Daryl Roth.
