Pan Asian Repertory Theatre's production of The Joy Luck Club has announced a one-week extension of its off-Broadway engagement, through December 1. Adapted by Susan Kim from the novel by Amy Tan, The Joy Luck Club opened on November 7 at the Julia Miles Theatre, directed by Tisa Chang.
Set in San Francisco in the 1980s, The Joy Luck Club follows four Mahjong-playing mothers from different provinces in China and their sometimes difficult relationships with their American-born daughters. Kim's adaptation had its world premiere in 1993 in a joint venture between Shanghai People's Art Theatre and The Long Wharf Theatre. Performed in a Mandarin translation, the production launched in Shanghai before playing Hong Kong. Chang directed the 1999 New York premiere at Pan Asian Repertory Theatre.
The cast of The Joy Luck Club includes Lydia Gaston,, Wai Ching Ho, Dian Kobayashi and Virginia Wing as the mothers as well as Tina Chilip, Sacha Iskra, Han Nah Kim, and Rosanne Ma as the daughters. Other cast members include Carol Honda, Scott Klavan, Kathleen Kwan, Ming Lee, Tom Matsusaka, Les J. N. Mau, and Hanh T. Thuc Tran.
