Due to the stagehands strike, only eight Broadway shows performed this past week, all of which experienced a jump in both grosses and capacity. Mary Poppins came out on top, grossing $1,122,801 and filling the vast New Amsterdam Theatre to 99.45%. Xanadu saw a significant increase in gross, bringing in more $385,000 at Broadway's smallest house, the Helen Hayes; and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee increased its capacity to 98.92% at Circle in the Square. Plays Mauritius, Pymalion and The Ritz had strong showings, filling their theaters to 92.29%, 86.35% and 82.11%, respectively. Young Frankenstein also remained open but has declined to report its grosses to the League of American Theatres and Producers.
*Please note that for the duration of the strike, Broadway.com will report only the top five shows in both grosses and capacity. We will return to our usual format once the strike concludes.
