Speech & Debate, Some Men Among GLAAD Media Awards Nominees

Nominees for the 19th annual GLAAD Media Awards were announced on January 20. The awards, presented by The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, recognize and honor media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and the issues that affect their lives. Award ceremonies will be held in New York on March 17 at the Marriott Marquis; in South Florida at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino on April 12; in Los Angeles on April 26 at the Kodak Theatre; and in San Francisco on May 10 at the San Francisco Marriott.

Three GLAAD categories honor theatrical productions. In the category of "New York Theater: Broadway & Off-Broadway," the nominees are 100 Saints You Should Know by Kate Fodor, All That I Will Ever Be by Alan Ball, The Beebo Brinker Chronicles by Kate Moira Ryan and Linda S. Chapman, Some Men by Terrence McNally and Speech & Debate by Stephen Karam.

In the category of "New York Theater: Off-Off-Broadway," the nominees are 1001 Beds by Tim Miller; BASH'd: A Gay Rap Opera by Chris Craddock and Nathan Cuckow, music by Aaron Macri; I Google Myself by Jason Schafer; Yank! book and lyrics by David Zellnik, music by Joseph Zellnik; and The Young Ladies Of by Taylor Mac.

"Los Angeles Theater" nominees include Act A Lady by Jordan Harrison; Anything by Tim McNeil; Avenue Q, book by Jeff Whitty, music and lyrics by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx; Havana Bourgeois by Carlos Lacamara; and The Long Christmas Ride Home by Paula Vogel.

Julie Taymor's Across the Universe was nominated for "Best Film: Wide Release," along with Stardust and The Jane Austen Book Club. Drama series nominees included Brothers & Sisters created by playwright Jon Robin Baitz, along with Degrassi: The Next Generation, Dirty Sexy Money, Greek and The L Word.
