Broadway Grosses: Farewell to The Color Purple

After a strong week leading up to Presidents' Day, the majority of Broadway box offices saw their grosses fall in the week following the holiday weekend. Bucking the trend: Disney's The Little Mermaid, which broke the $1 million mark and played to almost capacity audiences at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre. Broadway said good-bye to The Color Purple, which ended its 910-performance run at the Broadway Theatre on February 24, playing to more than 93% of capacity in its final week. Chazz Palminteri's A Bronx Tale also ended its limited run on February 24 at the Walter Kerr Theatre. The producers announced that Palminteri's solo show recouped its capitalization in spite of the 19-day stagehands strike, which began shortly after the show's opening night. Palminteri will reportedly embark on a national tour later in the year.
