Graciela Daniele's Broadway revival of Bob Fosse's Dancin' first announced last fall, will find a home at Roundabout Theatre Company's Studio 54 in the spring of 2009. Dancin' will begin previews next year on April 17 and open on May 5 for a limited engagement. A national tour of Dancin' will open in the fall of 2009. No casting has been set.
Fosse's original choreography will be recreated by his career-long assistant and dancer
Kathryn Doby. In addition, creative consultation will be provided by Nicole Fosse daughter of Fosse and Gwen Verdon and Ann Reinking an original cast member of the 1978 Broadway production. Daniele played Hunyak and served as dance captain for Fosse's original 1975 production of Chicago.
Dancin' opened at the Broadhurst Theatre on March 27, 1978 and played there, and later at the Ambassador Theatre, for a total of 1774 performances. Directed and choreographed by Fosse, it was nominated for seven 1978 Tony Awards and won Fosse one of his eight Tonys for Best Choreography. Fosse's vision of the show was to blend contemporary music with classical music, so Dancin' featured songs from a diverse mix of songwriters including Neil Diamond, Melissa Manchester, Johan Sebastian Bach, Jerry Leiber, Cat Stevens, Cynthia Weil, George M. Cohan, Barry Mann, Louis Prima, Johnny Mercer and Oscar Hammerstein II.
Several of the dances from Dancin' were previously recreated for the 1999 Tony-winning musical revue Fosse: "Crunchy Granola Suite," "Mr. Bojangles," "Big Noise from Winnetka," "I Wanna Be a Dancin' Man" and "Sing, Sing, Sing."
The design team for Dancin' will include original design team members Peter Larkin sets, Willa Kim costumes and Jules Fisher lights & projections, plus Jonathan Deans sound. Roundabout will present Dancin' in association with Greg Young, Elaine Krauss, Dancap Productions and Richard Levi.
