Jan Maxwell to Star in Off-Broadway Drama Substitution

Tony Award nominee Jan Maxwell will star in the world premiere of Anton Dudley's Substitution, the first production of the new Playwrights Realm theater company. Previews will begin at the SoHo Playhouse on April 26, with opening night set for May 4, directed by Katherine Kovner. The limited off-Broadway engagement will continue through May 17.

Along with Maxwell, the play also stars Kiernan Campion Pygmalion, Journey's End, Brandon Espinoza Scarcity and Shana Dowdeswell The Diary of Anne Frank at the Paper Mill Playhouse.

In Substitution, Calvin's mom Maxwell is coping with the death of her teenage son as best as she can. When a substitute teacher challenges everything she thinks she knows about Calvin, their volatile bond creates a complex unfolding of revelations.

Maxwell received Tony Award nominations for Coram Boy and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and appeared on Broadway in Sixteen Wounded, Match, The Dinner Party, The Sound of Music and Doll's House. Off-Broadway, she has appeared in Entertaining Mr. Sloane, House and Garden and My Old Lady, for which she won the Lucille Lortel Award.

Substitution will feature sets by Tom Gleeson, costumes by Theresa Squire, lighting by Jeff Croiter and sound by Jill BC DuBoff.
