The six member production staff of New York Theater Workshop has been laid off effective May 30, The New York Times reported on April 15. The off-Brodway company reportedly cut its operating budget by $1 million to $3.5 million partly to address the forthcoming loss of royalties from Rent, which began life at NYTW in 1996 and is scheduled to end its Broadway run in September.
Rather than presenting six full productions in the coming season, NYTW will present three full productions and three concerts of off-Broadway musicals. William Russo, general manager of Playwrights Horizons, is set to take over as full-time managing director on NYTW in May. Additional production and creative staff will be hired on a show-by-show basis.
