The Tony-winning musical Spring Awakening is coming to London. The Duncan Sheik-Steven Sater musical is set to begin performances at the Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith on January 23, 2009, and open at the off-West End venue on February 3. The run is scheduled through February 28.
Spring Awakening depicts how young people navigate the thrilling, confusing and mysterious time of their sexual awakening. The story centers on a brilliant young student named Melchior, his troubled friend Moritz and Wendla, a beautiful young girl on the verge of womanhood. The show, based on the 1891 play by Frank Wedekind, features music by Sheik and book and lyrics by Sater.
The full American creative team behind the show, headed by Tony winner Michael Mayer, will remount Spring Awakening in London with a British cast. The musical will mark the last production to be seen at this address under the tenure of Lyric Hammersmith artistic director David Farr, who is departing to become an associate director at the Royal Shakespeare Company.
Spring Awakening continues its Broadway run at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre.
