Beginning July 3, the Broadway musical A Catered Affair will replace its Wednesday night performance with a fourth matinee on Thursday. As a result, the new musical will be offering half of its performances in the afternoon, an unusual schedule for a Broadway production. "We seem to be morphing into a cult show for women over 40," the show's librettist and star Harvey Fierstein said in a statement. "So why not accommodate them by adding another matinee?"
Since performances of A Catered Affair began at the Walter Kerr Theatre on March 25, afternoon performances have played to no less than 95% of capacity, according to the press statement. Overall, the musical played to 73.35% of capacity for the week ending June 1. Says Fierstein, "The matinee ladies, the backbone of Broadway, have found their way to our theater, hankies in hand, and are seeing the show time and time again."
In addition to Fierstein as Uncle Winston, A Catered Affair stars Tony nominees Faith Prince and Tom Wopat and the parents of the bride, Leslie Kritzer as the bride-to-be and Matt Cavenaugh as the groom-to-be. The featured cast includes Philip Hoffman, Katie Klaus, Heather Mac Rae, Lori Wilner and Kristine Zbornik. The production is directed by John Doyle.
