Tony Award-winning choreographer Andy Blankenbuehler is taking his moves to the small screen, acting as guest choreographer on the hit TV dance competition series So You Think You Can Dance on July 2. Blankenbuehler's work recently took home the 2008 Tony for In the Heights' contemporary and Latin influenced choreography.
The Emmy-nominated So You Think You Can Dance, now in its fourth season, pits 20 of the nation's best undiscovered dancers against one another in both pairs and solos, featuring footwork from genres, including Broadway, hip-hop, ballroom, salsa, contemporary and jazz. Previous guest choreographers have included Emmy Award winner Mia Michaels, hip-hop expert Shane Sparks, former N*SYNC and music video choreographer Wade Robson and Broadway's Good Vibrations choreographer Tyce DiOrio.
Blankenbuehler, who made his Broadway debut as a Havana dancer in the 1992 revival of Guys and Dolls, has appeared on the Great White Way in Steel Pier, Fosse, Saturday Night Fever and 2002's Man of La Mancha revival. In addition to In the Heights, Blankenbuehler choreographed the 2006 Broadway revival of The Apple Tree and the off-Broadway musical Burleigh Grimes. He is currently working on choreography for the new musical 9 to 5.
