Broadway Grosses: Musicals Stay Hot; Passing Strange Says Good-Bye

Summer in New York means tourists, which is great news for hit Broadway musicals. Six titles topped the magic $1 million mark in grosses for the week including In the Heights, which barely missed making the top five, with several more shows not far behind. Although Mamma Mia! is a perennial best-seller, the debut of the feature film adaptation pushed it to the number one position in capacity, upending the usual champ in that category, Jersey Boys. Two Broadway shows closed over the weekend: the critically lauded Passing Strange which went out strong, playing to 85.55% of capacity and the starry revival of The Country Girl, which featured Morgan Freeman, Frances McDormand and Peter Gallagher.
