Angels, a new musical recently announced for the 2008-2009 Broadway season, has cancelled its late-August premiere engagement at the Strand Theatre in Shreveport, LA. The news release cited "technical requirements" as the reason for the cancellation, adding that the show's Broadway opening will be unaffected. No alternate plan for a pre-Broadway engagement of the show has been set.
"Angels is a very complex production with specific needs and, of course, can only be performed when absolutely ready," producer/author Marcus Cheong said in a statement. Written by the Australian team of Ken Lai book, music and lyrics and Cheong book and lyrics when the two were students at University of Sydney in 1998, Angels will feature what a news release calls "spectacular aerial choreography, unprecedented on Broadway."
Based on Milton's Paradise Lost, Angels is described as a timeless tale of a good versus evil, set during an ancient war between the Angels and Lucifer's fallen minions. A young angel, Sera Jessica Grové, has the power to control light, but aspires to a more heroic calling. She's manipulated by Lucifer Tony nominee Robert Cuccioli, a betrayal that turns tragic for the Angels, and Sera must find the courage and power to defeat her nemesis. Richard Fowler will direct a cast of 24, which also includes Nicholas Rodriguez.
