Dan Butler will replace Larry Pine in the New York Theatre Workshop's upcoming production of Michael Weller's new comedy Beast. Pine has left the production due to a detached retina, according to the New York Times. Previews for the show begin August 29 for a limited-engagement run opening September 15 and closing October 12, directed by Jo Bonney.
Beast centers on two badly wounded yet fiercely patriotic Iraqi war veterans who make their way home after recuperating in a hospital in Germany. The cast also features Raul Aranas, Jeremy Bobb, Lisa Joyce, Logan Marshall-Green, Eileen Rivera and Corey Stoll.
Best known for his recurring role on Frasier, Butler has appeared on Broadway in Twentieth Century, Biloxi Blues and The Hothouse. His off-Broadway credits include Old Money, The Lisbon Traviata, Waiting for Godot and The Only Worse Thing You Could Have Told Me, which earned him a Drama Desk nomination in 1995. He's appeared in numerous television shows and films, including Silence of the Lambs, Roseanne, Caroline in the City and Quantum Leap, among others. Butler also wrote, directed and starred in the 2007 documentary Karl Rove, I Love You.
