The upcoming Broadway revival of Neil Simon’s Brighton Beach Memoirs has launched a casting search for Eugene Jerome, the protagonist of Simon’s autobiographical play. Directed by David Cromer, who is currently represented off-Broadway by Our Town, the production will open on Broadway in the fall. A theater, opening date and further casting have yet to be announced.
According to a press release, the creative team is “seeking male performers between the ages of 16 and 21 that are intelligent, attractive and have a winning personality, ironic sense of humor, and excellent comic timing.” Headshots and resumes should be sent to the attention of “EUGENE” at Binder Casting 321 West 44th Street, Suite 606, New York, NY 10036, or via email brightonbeacheugene@gmail.com.
Set in 1937 and based on Simon’s Brooklyn upbringing, Brighton Beach Memoirs first opened on Broadway on March 27, 1983 at the Alvin Theatre now the Neil Simon Theatre, starring Matthew Broderick, who won a Tony Award for his performance as Eugene. The show closed on May 11, 1986, having played 1,299 performances, and was made into a movie later that year, starring Jonathan Silverman.
Broadway Bound, the final entry in Simon’s “Eugene” trilogy, is also being revived this fall in a Cromer-directed production that will run in rep with Brighton Beach Memoirs.
