Audra McDonald, Cheyenne Jackson will join Gavin Creel, Will Swenson and rest of the cast of the current Broadway revival of Hair as the tribe sings out for marriage equality on May 17. The stars will take a stand for equal marriage rights starting at 5:00PM on Sixth Avenue at 44th Street in the heart of the Theater District.
“I am thrilled that we are able to come together as a community to urge people to take direct action by calling their State Senators,” Creel, a current Tony nominee for Hair and co-founder of Broadway Impact, said in a statement. “This peaceful rally is going to be about love–and the right to marry whoever it is that you love.”
Speakers in attendance at the event will include Senator Tom Duane, sponsor of the marriage equality bill submitted to the New York State Senate, and New York State Assemblyman Daniel O’Donnell, brother of longtime Broadway veteran and marriage advocate Rosie O’Donnell. Additional speakers will be announced at another time.
In addition to Broadway Impact, the evening is presented in collaboration with Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, The Human Rights Campaign, Marriage Equality for New York, Empire State Pride Agenda and The Civil Rights Front.
