Just not that funny and there was too much yelling.
"Too loud. Supporting cast wasn’t that engaging. Main character mostly yelled. Our entire group was disappointed. "

High school performance level
"Out of everything I've seen on Broadway it was my least favorite show. The play plot was not interesting at all and the performance was poor. Not recommend"

Demeaning show
"The show portrays President Lincoln and his wife in a demeaning and inaccurate way. It portrays President Lincoln as a closet homosexual and Mary Todd Lincoln as alcoholic and dimwitted, and as both despising each other.. Yes she was flawed, but she was very intelligent (valeditorian of her high school) and was a loving and supportive wife. I am a liberal and supportive of addressing all the warts in out history, but this play was insulting and demeaning. "

Great acting! Poor content!
"Maya Rudolph acted her role to perfection. Unfortunately, the play itself was lewd, irreverant, and offensive! "

Disappointing
"It’s not my kind of humor - I found it juvenile. Mary and Abe Lincoln using obscenities got big laughs as did Maya making faces and performing slapstick. It reminded me of The Book of Mormons which a lot of people thought was hilarious but I found over rated. They both have a “shocking” premise which drives a lot of one-liner jokes and set-ups that are predictable and uninteresting."

Sophomoric

Surprising
"Three of us saw the play based on last years Tony awards. I would describe us as liberal and accepting. We found the play to be campy at best however generally crude. Did not understand the audience enthusiasm during the first part but the play improved overtime. This play was not our cup of tea."

Basic Humor
"I struggle to find much that I enjoyed about the show other than the actor who played Booth. Mary was insufferable and the humor was basic/lacked in vocabulary/low brow. I see 2-3 shows each visit (every two months) and have seen most of what is And has been on Broadway. This was hands-down, my least favorite show. "

Disagree with the masses
"I found the entire story to be unnecessarily crude and sophomoric. I think there’s a way to write intelligent, funny, insightful dialogue that the gay community can embrace. But this was not that. The audience came pre-disposed to laugh, but truthfully, the material was tragically underwhelming. "

I would give it a zero if possible.
"75 minutes of boring old gags. I was warned that it was lewd but it’s not really. Just the kind of “jokes” that have been around for decades. Kind of high school review stuff!
I’m not sure why it is popular. Don’t bother!"

Great acting!!!! But horrible story
"I heard wonderful things about this show and was anxious to see it. It was pretty appalled by the story line. I don’t know whether it’s true or not but Mary Todd was portrayed as an alcoholic and there were many jokes about that. Alcoholism is not funny. It is sad and tragic. The jokes were cheap and distasteful. I honestly almost left. A first!!!
That all being said: the acting was first rate: Maya Rudolph especially!!!

I was not entertained at all
"My husband and I kept looking at each other wondering why the audience thought any part of this show was funny. We found it to be offensive in content and filled with juvenile crass humor and gestures. The ending was entertaining. We almost walked out so guess I am glad we stayed and did not feel like we completely wasted our money. "

About
Oh, Mary!
Oh, Mary! is a dark comedy about a miserable, suffocated Mary Todd Lincoln in the weeks leading up to Abraham Lincoln’s assassination. Unrequited yearning, alcoholism, and suppressed desires abound in this 80-minute one-act play that finally examines the forgotten life and dreams of Mrs. Lincoln, through the lens of an idiot (playwright Cole Escola).
Declared “one of the best comedies in years” by The New York Times, Oh, Mary! received Tony Awards for Best Leading Actor in a Play (Cole Escola) and Best Direction of a Play (Sam Pinkleton), Drama League Awards for Outstanding Play and Outstanding Direction of a Play, as well as a special citation from the New York Drama Critics’ Circle. It was named a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
