Strange take on Lincoln, Mary Todd
"Funny in parts. Odd take on Lincoln etc maybe intended to be funny, but sometimes falls a little flat. Performances good, material not as much."

Not for everyone…
"Jane Krakowski was great and nailed her part. I think the plot is more controversial than I was expecting, since it fabricated the personalities of real historical figures. Even though there was a lot of humor and it was very clever, it did seem to cross a line in terms of respect for the deceased, at least for me."

Not what we expected
"This is not what we expected. Some parts were funny…some parts were a bit much. The cast is great and very talented. I believe it said persons 14 years and up…it is not suitable for children under 18. "

Not my brand of humor
"This slapstick over-the-top humor isn’t my thing. I got the gist of this a little over half way in and decided to leave and do something else with the rest of my evening. Plenty of people were yucking it up though. "

Could have lived without the overt sexual antics
"Well acted, funny at times, chaotic — interesting twist."

Very disappointed
"The venue is nice but small. The play has a small cast and it’s not a musical. There was a lot of profanity and the jokes were very crude and not that smartly written. It was 1:20 in length with no intermission. The drinks were a total rip off!"

Cute and clever but not that funny.
"It was a clever take on Mary Todd Lincoln and the show was well directed and executed. All of the actors did a great job. I just didn't think it was that funny and not worth the price. If this was an off-Broadway production I would give it a higher rating."

I Loved seeing Jinx
"I think Jinx really nailed the character but I don't think this was the play for me. I'm not a prude by all means but I just felt this was to much for me. I left feeling that it was too loud and nothing pulled at me. There was no one to really root for. Please know that I sat in a theater with a lot of people who really liked it and you could tell by their response, I just didn't get it. "

slapstick humor without wit
"The quality of the performances were excellent. The story line was weak with only shock sexual humor without wit or true laughable dialogue."

Wanted to be a fan but with last minute cancellation of Titus not worth it
"It’s funny if you think making of mental illness is laughable. If lots of cursing and by cursing I don’t mean your every day cursing from someone who is definitely not a prude would say…be prepared for pretty vulgar language. So together with Titus last minute cancellation and the idea of the play just not lading for me, I may be one of the few who would never wish this upon anyone they cared for! "

Not for everyone
"I love farcical humor but I think this play was a little too much for me. I wanted to like it and kept waiting to laugh but just failed on both counts. I was relieved that it’s relatively brief. "

Lots Of Promise, But Ultimately Disappointing
"I preface this by saying that we bought tickets during Titus Burgess’s run as Mary, but he was sick and couldn’t perform. I had high hopes for the show based on everything I read but the reality is that it felt more like an hour plus mid-level SNL sketch. The jokes leaned on the vulgar side, there was lots of yelling, and most of the plot was pretty predictable, including the big twist. I soooooo wanted to like this show but about 20 minutes in I was bored and looking forward to it being over. The last 15 minutes seemed tacked on to make it last past the hour mark. I know it won Tonys and was a runner up for a Pulitzer, but I honestly don’t know why. It had none of the cleverness of an Avenue Q or depth of a Next To Normal. To be fair, most of the audience seemed to really enjoy it, but it just didn’t work for me. Watch some clips and draw your own conclusions."

If you liked Book of Mormon, you'll love this!
"Tituss Burgess was terrific. Humor in the show was nothing new. Same tired , obvious and worn out "naughty" jokes. Well done production of nothing new."

Is it funny?
"The show is farcical in its construction. If the female lead character is played by a male, maybe it’s easier to find the humor? But when the lead is played by a woman, making fun of a mentally ill alcoholic is tough. In real life, Mary Lincoln suffered from chronic depression. Making that the butt of the joke is harsh. But, if you don’t know history, and making fun of handicaps is humorous to you, then I think you will find the show funny. "

Oh. Mary is just Oh, Kay
"Sketch comedy doesn’t quite pay off. Funny premise and some funny lines but structure is weak as is climax. Looks tired already and the actors talked so fast I couldn’t understand s lot of the dialogue - farce is not fast, it’s intense! Oh, well…"

Just not that funny and there was too much yelling.
"Too loud. Supporting cast wasn’t that engaging. Main character mostly yelled. Our entire group was disappointed. "

High school performance level
"Out of everything I've seen on Broadway it was my least favorite show. The play plot was not interesting at all and the performance was poor. Not recommend"

Surprising
"Three of us saw the play based on last years Tony awards. I would describe us as liberal and accepting. We found the play to be campy at best however generally crude. Did not understand the audience enthusiasm during the first part but the play improved overtime. This play was not our cup of tea."

Basic Humor
"I struggle to find much that I enjoyed about the show other than the actor who played Booth. Mary was insufferable and the humor was basic/lacked in vocabulary/low brow. I see 2-3 shows each visit (every two months) and have seen most of what is And has been on Broadway. This was hands-down, my least favorite show. "

Disagree with the masses
"I found the entire story to be unnecessarily crude and sophomoric. I think there’s a way to write intelligent, funny, insightful dialogue that the gay community can embrace. But this was not that. The audience came pre-disposed to laugh, but truthfully, the material was tragically underwhelming. "

About Oh, Mary!

Oh, Mary! is a dark comedy about a miserable, suffocated Mary Todd Lincoln in the weeks leading up to Abraham Lincoln’s assassination. Unrequited yearning, alcoholism, and suppressed desires abound in this 80-minute one-act play that finally examines the forgotten life and dreams of Mrs. Lincoln, through the lens of an idiot (playwright Cole Escola).

Declared “one of the best comedies in years” by The New York Times, Oh, Mary! received Tony Awards for Best Leading Actor in a Play (Cole Escola) and Best Direction of a Play (Sam Pinkleton), Drama League Awards for Outstanding Play and Outstanding Direction of a Play, as well as a special citation from the New York Drama Critics’ Circle. It was named a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
