Oh no Mary
"Honestly, I thought it was the worst play I've ever seen in my life and I'm 68 years old and I've seen a lot of plays in my lifetime. It was corny and juvenile, but at the same time obscene where it really didn't need to be. I think I chuckled one time. the only good part was it was only an hour and 15 minutes"

Funny? On occasion. Sophomoric? Definitely
"I came to O Mary! with an expectation of a memorable evening. I'd heard from others how uniquely funny the show was. Cole Escola did a great job portraying the part. But, the script they wrote lacked so many areas. At least 4 "jokes" were repeated throughout the play. First time I heard them, I smiled. The second time, I was unmoved. The third ( and fourth times), the jokes were a painful reminder of the juvenile humor throughout the play. I found the yelling between the characters not funny at all, and the portrayal of Lincoln started at the irreverent, but soon became offensive. All in all, probably the worst show I've seen in years."

Odd Woman Out
"The lead actor playing Mary is enormously talented and all the cast were very good. Unlike almost everyone else in the theater, I was not much entertained. This may be a generation gap thing or just me but the humor seemed to have more to do with using and using and using the word “fuck”, which does not seem very creative or thought provoking. I am not from the school where the grosser the gag the funnier. "

About Oh, Mary!

Oh, Mary! is a dark comedy about a miserable, suffocated Mary Todd Lincoln in the weeks leading up to Abraham Lincoln’s assassination. Unrequited yearning, alcoholism, and suppressed desires abound in this 80-minute one-act play that finally examines the forgotten life and dreams of Mrs. Lincoln, through the lens of an idiot (playwright Cole Escola).

Declared “one of the best comedies in years” by The New York Times, Oh, Mary! received Tony Awards for Best Leading Actor in a Play (Cole Escola) and Best Direction of a Play (Sam Pinkleton), Drama League Awards for Outstanding Play and Outstanding Direction of a Play, as well as a special citation from the New York Drama Critics’ Circle. It was named a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
