Not for everyone
"I love farcical humor but I think this play was a little too much for me. I wanted to like it and kept waiting to laugh but just failed on both counts. I was relieved that it’s relatively brief. "

Lots Of Promise, But Ultimately Disappointing
"I preface this by saying that we bought tickets during Titus Burgess’s run as Mary, but he was sick and couldn’t perform. I had high hopes for the show based on everything I read but the reality is that it felt more like an hour plus mid-level SNL sketch. The jokes leaned on the vulgar side, there was lots of yelling, and most of the plot was pretty predictable, including the big twist. I soooooo wanted to like this show but about 20 minutes in I was bored and looking forward to it being over. The last 15 minutes seemed tacked on to make it last past the hour mark. I know it won Tonys and was a runner up for a Pulitzer, but I honestly don’t know why. It had none of the cleverness of an Avenue Q or depth of a Next To Normal. To be fair, most of the audience seemed to really enjoy it, but it just didn’t work for me. Watch some clips and draw your own conclusions."

"Tituss Burgess was terrific. Humor in the show was nothing new. Same tired , obvious and worn out "naughty" jokes. Well done production of nothing new."

Is it funny?
"The show is farcical in its construction. If the female lead character is played by a male, maybe it’s easier to find the humor? But when the lead is played by a woman, making fun of a mentally ill alcoholic is tough. In real life, Mary Lincoln suffered from chronic depression. Making that the butt of the joke is harsh. But, if you don’t know history, and making fun of handicaps is humorous to you, then I think you will find the show funny. "

Oh. Mary is just Oh, Kay
"Sketch comedy doesn’t quite pay off. Funny premise and some funny lines but structure is weak as is climax. Looks tired already and the actors talked so fast I couldn’t understand s lot of the dialogue - farce is not fast, it’s intense! Oh, well…"

Manic beyond belief
"This was our first choice based on many friends’ experiences but it was a huge disappointment. Meg Stalter is great in Hacks, but a little goes a long way and had there been an intermission, we would have left. The rest of the cast was decent but it’s beyond yelling campy and we’re gay! I wish we could have seen anyone other than Stalter because it could have been fantastic."

Clever idea
"The lead was clearly energetic and could yell. She also had an impressive range in terms of her capacity to portray emotions. I found her truly clever, if over stated at times. The acting teacher was a talented, authentic actor. I liked the clever musical arrangements at the end. That said, the rest of the show engaged actors reading a script I found in desperately poor taste and downright dull and shocking at the same time. I grew up seeing bway shows. I am astounded by how popular this one seems to be"

Worst show I ever saw
"Wife and I probably saw 25 to 30 Broadway shows over the years and this particular show, oh Mary seem like they created they show over a weekend with little to no effort.
Weak, slapstick comedy with the thinnest of plot made many people laugh, but for some reason, I just hated it and was bored.
After seeing any Broadway show, I always Marveled at their talent, this show that did not happen so save your money and pass to the next show."

Demeaning show
"The show portrays President Lincoln and his wife in a demeaning and inaccurate way. It portrays President Lincoln as a closet homosexual and Mary Todd Lincoln as alcoholic and dimwitted, and as both despising each other.. Yes she was flawed, but she was very intelligent (valeditorian of her high school) and was a loving and supportive wife. I am a liberal and supportive of addressing all the warts in out history, but this play was insulting and demeaning. "

Disappointing
"It’s not my kind of humor - I found it juvenile. Mary and Abe Lincoln using obscenities got big laughs as did Maya making faces and performing slapstick. It reminded me of The Book of Mormons which a lot of people thought was hilarious but I found over rated. They both have a “shocking” premise which drives a lot of one-liner jokes and set-ups that are predictable and uninteresting."

Surprising
"Three of us saw the play based on last years Tony awards. I would describe us as liberal and accepting. We found the play to be campy at best however generally crude. Did not understand the audience enthusiasm during the first part but the play improved overtime. This play was not our cup of tea."

Basic Humor
"I struggle to find much that I enjoyed about the show other than the actor who played Booth. Mary was insufferable and the humor was basic/lacked in vocabulary/low brow. Disagree with the masses
"I found the entire story to be unnecessarily crude and sophomoric. I think there’s a way to write intelligent, funny, insightful dialogue that the gay community can embrace. But this was not that. The audience came pre-disposed to laugh, but truthfully, the material was tragically underwhelming. "

About
Oh, Mary!
Oh, Mary! is a dark comedy about a miserable, suffocated Mary Todd Lincoln in the weeks leading up to Abraham Lincoln’s assassination. Unrequited yearning, alcoholism, and suppressed desires abound in this 80-minute one-act play that finally examines the forgotten life and dreams of Mrs. Lincoln, through the lens of an idiot (playwright Cole Escola).
Declared “one of the best comedies in years” by The New York Times, Oh, Mary! received Tony Awards for Best Leading Actor in a Play (Cole Escola) and Best Direction of a Play (Sam Pinkleton), Drama League Awards for Outstanding Play and Outstanding Direction of a Play, as well as a special citation from the New York Drama Critics’ Circle. It was named a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
