Brilliant!!!
"I have been a Broadway theater-goer for decades and this play has been the most inspiring, complex, powerful, thought-provoking and pertinent play I have EVER seen. It is no wonder why it won the Pulitzer Prize. Regrettably, I was at the final performance on Broadway because I would see it again and again. "

Amazing show and cast
"This show was utterly amazing totally different than when I was expecting, but I’m glad I saw it. And I happen to see it on closing night the final performance and the cast did not hold back."

It’s more than I hoped for.
"Any play that can make me laugh as much as it makes me think is great. Most of what I usually go to see are musicals, so when a straight up traditional play comes along, I pause. Purpose required attentive listening and that’s what it got from me. I loved it!"

Serious subjects with humor to help
"The show dealt with serious issues facing African American families in an honest, nonjudgemental way. The humor relieved a lot of the tension of discussing these sensitive and often avoided subjects. The complexity of reality shown through and it felt OK and that we can handle it as families."

Look behind the curtain
"When a guest enters the home of an iconic civil rights leader and interacts with the family, disfunction is revealed and humanity is on full display. Wonderful show, full of challenges and laughter, by great actors. "

Something for everyone
"So well acted, engaging with many moving parts. I liked that it engaged a variety of perspectives and issues from hypocrisy to religion, mental health, queerness, relationships, etc, in a less traditional manner using the African-American family as a vehicle."

Brilliant, heartwarming and honest
"All characters were well-drawn and consistently played. All actors were equally strong. The themes of honesty, family dynamics and duplicity were demonstrated. Themes were universal. It was definitely worth traveling from Richmond VA to see this award winning drama."

Family is forever, but..
"The actors were superb! The narrator prepared the audience for the upsets which continued throughout the performance. The lessons given were on point. The audience if paying attention was left to examine their family relationships and their place in the family and the world. "

What is your purpose? The play is an invitation to ask yourself just that.
"As if we are seated in the Living Room, Nazareth includes us in on the discussion both from the inside and the outside. Riveting in its examination of "truth" and purpose. Precise in its willingness to mirror the cost of willful ignorance. Painful and funny and at the same time, this offering might assist one willing to take it all in to live more honestly and fully. "

A major play
"I don't have the time to provide the detailed review that this major American play merits. It is a complex, rich, compelling examination of faith and purpose--faith in the purpose of doubt in juxtaposition with doubt in the pursuit of purpose--explored with richness and complexity against the generational history of an African American family deeply embedded in the crises of the last 75 years, evoking the possibility of locating--and/or of fixating on, despite the impossibility of locating--the site of immaculate conception. This is not a religious play, nor an allegorical play, nor a historical play, but rather the dramatizing of individual struggle, personal betrayal, and, ultimately, hopeful confusion in accepting the demands of a troubled, racialized, gendered, politicized, and capitalized social economy. These abstractions do not do justice to the careful particularization of the characters and situations, intensified by uniformly impeccable performances. I have not stopped thinking about the implications of this play. I wish its run could be extended indefinitely, so that I could see it again (and again (and again (and again)))."

About Purpose

For decades, the influential Jasper family has been a pillar of Black American Politics: civil rights leaders, pastors and congressmen. But like all families, there are cracks and secrets just under the surface. When the youngest son Nazareth returns home to Illinois with an uninvited friend in tow, the family is forced into a reckoning with itself, its faith and the legacies of Black radicalism. Spirited, hilarious and filled with intrigue, Purpose is an epic family drama from one of the country’s most celebrated voices.
