"Although I'm not much of a Gilbert and Sullivan fan, this update is great fun. With a new book, a new setting (New Orleans), some revised songs and very clever choreography, Pirates is a delight! The cast is perfect, especially David Hyde Pierce as Major General Stanley. Ramin Karimloo as the Pirate King and Jinkx Monsoon as Ruth meld well with Hyde Pierce - lots of good chemistry! Several show-stopping numbers. Know your semaphor! A very enjoyable show!"

Witty, funny and exciting!
"Our first Broadway experience, we've seen many shows in our native Scotland, this was funny, the singing of an excellent standard, the show is light on plot making it extremely easy to enjoy as a performance, the Modern Major General song a particular highlight! Cast were excellent the drinks at the venue were obscenely over priced, I was billed $78 for two double gin and tonics which was twice the price of a bottle of the gin, the soda was however not as expensive at $10 for the first and $5 per refill.
Show great, theatre great, concessions best avoided. "

Pure enjoyment that doesn't try to be anything else
"It's less a remake of Pirates of Penzance than it is an irreverent, exuberant love letter to Gilbert and Sullivan in general that takes excerpts from several of their comic operas. At no point does it ask the audience to take it seriously - it's just fun, with no serious plot, much less deep emotional experience. In other words, it very much resembles the source material. There's some slapstick that doesn't require any understanding, but the vast majority of the humor will go over kids' heads, so I wouldn't suggest it for them. Familiarity with G&S's work is helpful, but not really necessary.
We (two adults and a 17-year-old) had a lot of fun."

Fantastic show and cast!
"The show was fantastic. We really liked that they set it in New Orleans and added a jazzy twist to the songs. Of course we wanted to see David Hyde Pierce and Jinkx Monsoon, but you could tell that it was a tight knit ensemble cast and there were no big egos, everyone was a star. This was our first time at the Todd Haimes Theatre and we will be back! It's a smaller theater and that made the show more intimate and interactive. The staff are first class. They are so friendly, professional and extremely accommodating. My mother uses a wheelchair but can transfer to a seat. I didn't realize, when I booked the tickets, that while our seats were on the end of the row, they were up against a wall. We couldn't get the wheelchair next to the seat to do the transfer. The house manager (I didn't get his name and I wish I did), went above and beyond for us. He found us empty seats right down by the stage that were accessible. I cannot say enough good things about him and the vibe of the theater itself."

Best musical I have seen in a long time!
"The show was funny, witty, and beautiful. It was such an amazing celebration for my eyes. The actors were great! I enjoyed the engagement with the audience. David Hyde Pierce’s rendering of his character was exceptional. Thank you for the Galapro feature; it helped understand all the words in the songs, which made the experience even better. Please consider filming the play for others to see once the show closes. Thank you for an amazing show!!!!"

PIRATES is a KNOCKOUT!
"I admit that 'Pirates of Penzance' has always been my favorite from the Gilbert and Sullivan catalogue, so I'm a wee bit biased.
But, bless my stars, this new interpretation is absolutely dazzling!
A bevy of beautiful sisters, the funniest Modern Major General EVER in David Hyde-Pierce, hilariously bumbling local constabulary, the scene stealing Jinkx Monsoon, a raffish band of pirates looking for love, and Ramin Karimloo (be still my heart!) as the most charming, roguish Pirate King imaginable! See it before it gets away. Guaranteed to split your sides with laughter and delight!"

Great Show
"David Hyde Pierce’s MAJOR GENERAL SONG is not to be missed. Each and every cast member is a star. Ramin Karimloo’s name speaks for itself. He’s a theater legend for good reason. Jinkx Monsoon’s performance went above and beyond my already high expectations. Her voice and character acting is just stunning. Nicholas Barasch absolutely kills it, as does Samantha Williams. Their chemistry is impeccable. The entire ensemble is a joy to watch, bringing charm to each individual character they create. From the script, to the score, to the sets and choreography, it’s a perfect Broadway musical!"

Happy, light-hearted fun!
"The presentation was excellent! The entire cast did an amazing job! David Hyde Pierce was wonderful as the Modern-Major General and his low-key expressions enhanced the comedy. One of the actresses got so tickled during the Modern-Major-General song, that she was barely holding it together, but made it through the whole performance. This got me so tickled that I laughed even harder! This was a nice escape from the weightiness of life. I would see it again if I could!"

Wonderful blend of the old Gilbert & Sullivan and the new
"My husband and I adored Pirates, the Penzance Musical. I know every word of the original, and much of the musical matched that. But I loved the jazz music and resetting the location to New Orleans. All of the cast was terrific. We particularly enjoyed the energy of the chorus and the fun choreography. The audience (myself included) thought that the new ending was a wonderful way to end the story. "

Pirates did not disappoint
"We travelled from Wisconsin to celebrate our 55th Anniversary and my husband's birthday. He was a pirate in a community theater production and I created the costumes. We then saw it at the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis. This production was so much fun. The physicality of the performers, the stunning costumes, the clear sound, gorgeous set. All of it was a night to treasure"

About
Pirates! The Penzance Musical
Ramin Karimloo, Jinkx Monsoon, and David Hyde Pierce lead the crew in Pirates! The Penzance Musical, this must-see Roundabout reimagining of The Pirates of Penzance. Scott Ellis (Doubt; Kiss Me, Kate) directs and Warren Carlyle (Harmony; Kiss Me, Kate) choreographs with a hilarious new adaptation by Rupert Holmes (The Mystery of Edwin Drood), musical direction by Joseph Joubert (Caroline, or Change), and orchestrations by Joubert and Daryl Waters (Memphis).
Gilbert & Sullivan’s pirate ship docks in New Orleans in this jazzy-bluesy vision of the crowd-pleasing classic, in an outrageously clever romp sizzling with Caribbean rhythms and French Quarter flair. With the tongue-twisting Major-General, the rabble-rousing Pirate King, newly-imagined young lovers, daring daughters, footloose pirates and fleet-footed police, there's a shipload of musical comedy delights on board to dazzle first-timers and G&S aficionados alike.
