Broadway Grosses: New Shows Show Strength

In the first five days after the Tony nominations were announced, it’s difficult to gauge “bumps” in attendance, though Next to Normal experienced a $50,000+ rise in grosses from the previous week. Family-oriented musicals are still lagging overall waiting for summer vacationers to pump up their grosses, but the new shows that are already hits—West Side Story, Billy Elliot, God of Carnage and Hair—kept their spots in the frontrunners lists, and Waiting for Godot is now playing to more than 95% of capacity at Studio 54. Meanwhile, Broadway said good-bye to the new play Impressionism, which closed on May 10.
