Pop star Justin Timberlake might roll the dice with a big-screen version of Broadway classic, according to British tabloid The Sun. Film director Guy Ritchie and Timberlake reportedly shook hands over whiskey at a British pub on June 29, with Timberlake vowing to star in Ritchie's updated remake of the musical Guys and Dolls. Action star (and frequent Ritchie collaborator) Jason Statham is also possibly attached to the project.
Triple-threat Timberlake, who has been showcasing his acting, singing and dancing abilities since his 1989 debut on Disney’s The Mickey Mouse Club, is a natural fit for the classic musical. His other acting credits include Alpha Dog, Black Snake Moan, Shrek the Third and The Love Guru.
The original film version of the stage musical (which features music and lyrics by Frank Loesser and a book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows) was released in 1955 and starred Marlon Brando as Sky Masterson, Jean Simmons as Sarah Brown, Frank Sinatra as Nathan Detroit and original Broadway star Vivian Blaine as Adelaide. Guys and Dolls was seen on the London stage in 2005 in a revival that starred Ewan McGregor, Jenna Russell, Nathan Hodge and Jane Krakowski. (According to The Sun, Ritchie took ex-wife Madonna’s daughter, Lourdes, to see it.) The most recent Broadway revival, starring Craig Bierko, Kate Jennings Grant, Oliver Platt and Lauren Graham, closed on June 14.
