Rupert Friend and Tamsin Greig will take the Garrick Theatre stage for a London production of Douglas Carter Beane's Tony Award-nominated comedy The Little Dog Laughed. Directed by Jamie Lloyd, the production begins performances on January 8, 2010.
Greig will star as ballsy Hollywood agent Diane in the cautionary tale of a film actor named Mitchell (Friend) who dares to come out of the closet, the agent who wants him to stay in it and the love triangle created when Mitchell falls for a boy who just happens to have a girlfriend. A comedy of manners, The Little Dog Laughed showcases the hilarity of Hollywood hypocrisy and self-deception in the world of show business.
Greig has appeared on stage in Much Ado About Nothing, which earned her an Olivier Award, as well as King John, God of Carnage and Gethsemane. Her screen credits include the television series Play it Again, Black Books, Green Wing, Love Soup and The Diary of Anne Frank and the films Miranda, Pure, Shaun of the Dead and Captain Eager and the Mark of the Voth.
Friend has appeared on film in The Libertine, Pride & Prejudice, Mrs. Palfrey at The Claremont, Outlaw, The Last Legion, Virgin Territory, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, The Young Victoria and The Continuing and Lamentable Saga of the Suicide Brothers. The production will mark his London stage debut.
The Little Dog Laughed originally premiered in New York at off-Broadway's Second Stage Theatre before transferring to Broadway in October 2006. It opened at the Cort Theatre on November 13, 2006, starring Julie White as Diane and Tom Everett Scott as Mitchell. The play was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Play, with White earning a Best Actress win for her performance.
