Casting has been announced for Stephen Daldry's production of J.B. Priestly's An Inspector Calls. Nicholas Woodeson, who played the part of Inspector Goole in Daldry’s 1994 Broadway production, will reprise the title role.
Also featured in the cast are David Roper as Arthur Billing, Sandra Duncan as Sybil Birling, Marianne Oldham as Sheila Birling, Robin Whiting as Eric Birling, Timothy Waston as Gerald Croft and Diana Payne Myers as Edna.
In An Inspector Calls, the Birling family's peaceful dinner party is shattered when the mysterious Inspector Goole calls unexpectedly and begins his investigations into the death of a young woman. Daldry's Olivier and Evening Standard Award-winning revival of the 1945 thriller originally premiered at the National Theatre in 1992 before transferring to the West End and, subsequently, to Broadway. The 1994 Broadway production earned four Tony Awards, including Best Revival, Best Director, Best Featured Actress (Jane Adams) and Best Lighting Design for Rick Fisher who has recreated his dark, stormy palettes for this new version. Designer Ian McNeil has also reproduced his original Inspector period sets and costumes.
The production will begin previews at the Novello Theatre on September 22 and will play a six-week engagement, closing on November 14, 2009.
