Stephen Sondheim's Tony-winning musical Passion will be part of the 2010 line-up at London's Donmar Warehouse. Directed by Jamie Lloyd, helmer of the current Donmar hit Piaf, the piece will be part of a series of events marking Sondheim's 80th birthday. Current Piaf star Elena Roger is rumored to be up for Passion, though no official casting or details have been released about the production.
The Donmar's 2010 season begins with a new staging of Lanford Wilson's 1970 play Serenading Louie, a drama about suburban couples. Directed by Simon Curtis, the piece plays February 11 through March 27.
Following Serenading Louie, Lloyd will direct the world premiere of Polar Bears, the debut play from novelist Mark Haddon, about a man in love with a woman battling mental illness. The show will run from April 1, 2010, through May 22.
The Passion revival, Sondheim's 1994 collaboration with creative cohort and writer James Lapine, will debut at the Warehouse during the second half of 2010. The production originally debuted on Broadway in May 1994, starring Tony Award winner Donna Murphy, Jere Shea, Tom Aldredge and Marin Mazzie. The show scored Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Book and Best Original score, among others. A tenth anniversary concert performance hit Broadway for one-night only in 2004, starring Murphy, Mazzie, Michael Cerveris and Alexander Gemignani.
