Tony winner Elaine Stritch will return to the Cafe Carlyle in January with a new one-woman show with a straightforward title: Elaine Stritch Singin' Sondheim…One Song at a Time.
"I perform the best when I do something that scares the shit out of me," Stritch told The New York Post. "And what could be more scare than learning nine or 10 Steve Sondheim songs? 'Ladies Who Lunch' almost put me in intensive care, for God's sake."
Stritch delivered that Sondheim showstopper as an original cast member of his 1971 masterpiece Company, which earned her one of four acting Tony nominations. She was also honored for Bus Stop in 1956, Sail Away in 1962 and A Delicate Balance in 1996. Stritch finally won a Best Special Theatrical Event Tony in 2002 for her acclaimed one-woman show Elaine Stritch At Liberty. She regularly appears on TV's 30 Rock as the brash mother of Alec Baldwin's character, earning an Emmy Award for the part in 2007.
Elaine Stritch Singin' Sondheim...One Song at a Time will open on January 5, 2010 and run through January 30, 2010.
