Cirque du Soleil's Big Top Production Ovo Lands in New York on April 9

Circus pioneers Cique Du Soleil, currently represented by the seasonal spectacle Wintuk, will bring their big top back to New York this spring with the company's latest touring production, Ovo. Written and directed by Deborah Colker, the show will hit Randall's Island Park for a limited engagement beginning April 9, 2010.

Cirque Du Soleil's Ovo is described as a headlong rush into a colorful ecosystem teeming with life, where insects work, eat, crawl, flutter, play, fight and look for love in a non-stop riot of energy and movement. When a mysterious egg appears in their midst, the insects are awestruck and intensely curious about this iconic object. It’s love at first sight when a gawky, quirky insect arrives in this bustling community and a fabulous ladybug catches his eye, and the feeling is mutual.

The cast features 54 performing artists from 13 countries, integrating choreography by Colker, the first female director at Cirque du Soleil. Ovo features many of the company's signature acrobatic acts including a stunning flying trapeze act—six flyers soaring 40 feet in the air, the biggest act of its kind ever presented under a big top by Cirque du Soleil. The finale features 20 artists running, jumping and leaping up a 24-foot vertical wall.

Cirque du Soleil is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2009. From a group of 20 street performers at its beginnings in 1984, Cirque is now a major Quebec-based organization providing high-quality artistic entertainment. The company has more than 4,000 employees from over 40 different countries, including 1,000 performing artists.

Also in 2010, Cirque will present a new vaudeville-type show, Banana Shpeel, at the Beacon Theatre for a limited engagement.
